ROBERT RAUSCHENBERG

After me griping about there being no Rauschenberg art at the Abstract Expressionism exhibition at the Royal Academy late last year, here was a full dedicated Robert Rauschenberg show to more than make up for it.  The exhibition was at London’s Tate Modern until April 2nd,
I went down there in February to see it, and I wasn’t disappointed.  The work on show represented a wide variety of styles, techniques and periods in his life and career.  He was one of the most original and creative artists of the twentieth century and, for me, as important as Picasso and Warhol.  He had a profound influence on later generations of artists, and still has.  He did not fit into , or follow, any other genre or movement, and showed strong ethics in his social and political conscience.
Rauschenberg covered a lot of ground in his life and career, and practically all his interests were represented at the Tate.  He experimented with images from magazines by applying lighter fluid, and then rubbing the back of the image onto his canvas, or whatever he was working on.  The images were generally small, as magazine photos are, and he was limited to the exact size of the given printed image, so he could not enlarge them by this method.  He later took to working with silkscreens (at the same time as Warhol) and he had a large collection of his own stock screens, which he would use again and again in different arrangements.  The finished prints were generally large and featured many iconic images (JFK, Moon landings, old masters, cityscapes), all juxtaposed in various formations and compositions.
He used to walk around his block in 1950’s New York City and pick up discarded objects, and take them back to his studio to make art out of them, which became known as his combines.  These were part sculpture, assemblage and painting.  His famous ‘Bed’ was on show at this exhibition, as was the stuffed goat with the tyre round its middle.  He wasn't taken seriously as an artist for some time, and many thought he was just taking the piss.  He was first accepted and given the credit he deserved in the 1960’s, due to his screen prints.  He won an award for them, and he then promptly gave instruction for his stock of screens to be destroyed.  He was never a man to stay standing still, and always looked to move into the next groundbreaking direction.
Rauschenberg was also an avid photographer and he made many photo montages, treating them with ink or paint, creating a further exciting mix of media.
He also worked closely with John Cage and the dancer, Merce Cunningham.  With them, he created theatre set designs, films, and even choreography.  He was himself keen on dancing, and appeared in some of his own choreographed shows and films.
His later work was also represented.  Some of these were vast canvases, which included printmaking and mixed media.  By the time I got to these, I felt like I’d already seen the best of his work, and I was feeling quite full up with ideas and inspiration to take to my own work.  It took over two hours to get round it all, and I felt like I’d seen some of the greatest art of the twentieth century.  Here's to the great Robert Rauschenberg!
Also, I think hats off to Tate Modern for being able to acquire these important and iconic works for this exhibition, many of which had travelled a long way, and rarely seen in the UK.  Truly world class!

ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM

It was Karen’s birthday recently, and we went down to London to see the Abstract Expressionism exhibition at the Royal Academy.  We were both blown away by the work on show.  It ranged from the influences and beginnings, right up to some later works of the artists involved in that movement.
One of the influences was the work of Armenian-born artist, Archile Gorky, which was brilliant in itself.  The highly expressive lines in his drawing were very influential on both Willem de Kooning and Jackson Pollock.  There was a whole room of Gorky, one of de Kooning and two rooms of Pollock.  All of which buzzed with life and living expression.  It was fantastic to see a good range of work from these greats.  However there was a vast number of other artists’ work on display too.
The Franz Kline had an immediacy and boldness of expression.  Minimal, both in their colours and in their forms, but violent in execution. Very striking.
The Robert Motherwell pictures, of which there were only a few, were in some cases similar to the Kline ones.  But there was a collage of his which I really found exciting.  It was a picture of New York City, in mostly blue and black, and was very loose and free.  I kept on being drawn back to it, again and again.  I am after all a collage artist myself.
Mark Rothko had a room to himself too.  I have seen some Rothkos before at Tate Modern.  The disorientating dreamlike pull of them holds me trance-like in the grip of their dark beauty.
There was also a lot of work by lesser-known artists of the era.  The Lee Krasner paintings showed a similarity to her partner Pollock’s, but her work had something beautiful about it too, and was distinctly hers.  Joan Mitchell’s work stood out, as did the Clyfford Still and the Sam Francis ones.  There was also a black-painted wooden sculpture by Louise Nevelson.  This was a large wall assemblage of boxes and a vast array of wooden objects, like bits of table and chair legs, wooden tools and cut-out shapes etc.  All painted black, I found it quite difficult to focus on and it grew in time as I stood before it.
Most of the work in this exhibition was vast in size. Some of it was hard to take in without physically moving along it, or standing at a range of distances away. One thing for me is that I like to get up as close as possible, to see the way the paint reacts against adjacent colours, to study the brush-strokes, and to nearly be able to feel the textures and any objects embedded within.  Almost to breathe it all in.
There was so much to see, and I’ve only scratched the surface here really.  What I would like to have seen was some work by Robert Rauschenberg, but there was nothing of his.  Perhaps he was not officially an abstract expressionist, but he was working in that time and place, and with those influences.  All in all though, it was a fantastic experience to be amongst some of the greatest work of the twentieth century.  We were in there for just over two and a half hours, and we both came back feeling inspired.  I’d recommend it to anyone.

Songs and open mic. activity

Hi all,

I'm doing an open mic. gig this coming Sunday 18th January 2015 at Telford's, Chester.  Please come along if you can!  I'll be playing some new songs, ones I have never played in public before.  Also an older one (or two, if there's time!).  Of course, Thor will be joining me on bass.
I have been working extensively on getting a lot of my old songs together, beating them into shape, re-writing parts and generally improving them.  Some of these songs are decades old and hardly anyone has ever heard them!
I have also written a good number of new songs, which nobody else has ever heard yet, (except Karen).
I'll introduce them gradually into my sets as time goes.......(check out the open mics!)
There is a video recording of  "Jackdaw Alien" on Youtube, filmed at Alexander, Chester, in December.  Check it out here :-

If anyone out there would like us to do a set, or give us some gigs, it would be most welcome.
Please get in touch!

Thanks,
Shem

Shem activity and a SHEMBOID GIG!

Hello again everybody!

SHEM
I've been doing lots of open mic gigs in Leeds and Chester lately.  Thor has kindly joined me recently and we're getting a set together and have about ten songs of mine that we've been playing so far.  Thor is playing bass guitar and I am singing and playing acoustic guitar and harmonica.  We are going to do much more in future and hopefully get some good recordings done and bigger and better gigs too!

REV REV
I think that's just about it for Rev Rev now.  I can't see us working together any more.  Our last gig was at Telford's Warehouse on Friday 13th June 2014.   There is a clip from it on the Rev Rev tab.  Hope you like it....Neon Fish Are Flying....

SHEMBOID    GIG   UPCOMING
I have been asked to do a gig at the Recon Festival in Leeds on Sunday the 28th September.  It is at Hyde Park Picture House.   I am very excited about this and been working out lots of ideas for it.  I have not done any Shemboid gigs for a few years now and I'm looking forward to working in that mode again.  I will keep you posted about this one.....it is an afternoon gig, I believe....

Okay that's all for now, thanks

Getting out and about at 'Open mic' nights.

I have recently been doing open mic sessions at the Chemic Tavern in Leeds on Thursdays.   I have been getting together a number of old and new songs and practising them with acoustic guitar and harmonica with vocal. Some of the songs I've been doing are “Strangers Outside My Door”, “Jackdaw Alien”, “Sunrise”, “Green Fields Of England”, “Behind Every Face” and “You Take It All”. There are some new ones too in the shape of “The Burning Tree” and “All That Matters”.
I have also been working up some electric ones with backing drums – I have been practising “The Case Of The Missing Brain”, “Monster Face” and three more new ones, which are “Vampire Exposed”, “Mask” and “I Must Be Out Of My Mind”.
This is all a bit different for me. I have not been getting any gigs doing anything else, so I thought I'll try my hand at open mic nights around Leeds. Noise and experimental music does not really go down well with open mic crowds, so it has to be the songs. Eventually I'll work out some way of incorporating the two together, but for now I'm getting some experience doing the songs straight.
I have been working at writing a lot of new stuff as well as re-working older ideas.

There will be a new Shemboid album out sometime soon – when I eventually get the art work done and finally decide on the tracks. I'll let you know when it's ready.

See you soon,

Shem

Monoprints # 2

This may be my last blog post of 2013 as I'm going to be very busy before and during Christmas.
I've done some more monoprints and there is a selection below.
I've been doing a fair bit of writing of poems and songs recently.  Also working on a new Shemboid album but that won't be finished till well into the new year.
It was an idea to do a Rev Rev gig in Chester again just before Christmas, but that is not going to happen now - it's such a busy time of year and getting all my stuff there and storing it somewhere out of the way is always very difficult, there isn't much room for it - so best forget it for now.
Okay, I'll keep it brief so I wish you all the best for the festive season and I'll see you sometime soon.
Here are the prints,
love,
Shem x

Paul Klee exhibition and some new work of my own.

I recently went down to London to see the Paul Klee exhibition at Tate Modern.  The pictures on show were fantastic and there were absolutely loads of them!  I hadn't realized before I went that he actually painted on a small scale.  Most of the pictures were no bigger than A3 size.  There were a few bigger ones, but not that many.  It was very inspiring and to see them for real meant you could get an idea of how he worked.  It took us something like two and a half hours to get round them all, and it was quite intense because you had to get very close to most of them to really see them properly (due to their small size).

I felt very inspired to do some painting as soon as I could when I got back to Leeds,  so I have been working on some new pictures of my own this last couple of weeks.  I haven't got many finished ones yet, so I will not show you the unfinished ones. Here's a finished one...

Also there are a few quite interesting pictures I did on my phone....

and finally a happy accident.........

Thanks for tuning in.......see you soon,

Shem

Recent Rev Rev gig.

There's a new Rev Rev tab you can check out now.

We did a gig at the Golden Eagle in Chester on 4th October.
Here is a review by Dan Schott;

http://thedanschott.wordpress.com/2013/10/09/rev-rev-the-alternative-alternative-4th-october-2013/

There's some rough video footage included too.

The recording I made of the gig sounds very good.  Some good psych jam elements.
We're going to release a live album sometime next year.  We already have some good tracks and this last recording has plenty of fine ones.  They get better every time.
The recording sounds a hell of a lot better than the video footage linked above, I hasten to add.

It always takes us a few songs to get warmed up, but when we get going, the going's good.  We did two sets on the night.  The second set is always better than the first.
We don't actually rehearse very much because I live in Leeds and the rest of the band live in Chester.

I'll keep you posted on further developments.

Daniel Schott's Blog

Daniel Schott seemed to like the new Shemboid album "In The Clouds" and asked me to write something for his blog, which I did.  I may have made omissions or mistakes, but I had a go and the result is now online at

http://schottslist.wordpress.com/2014/12/01/in-the-clouds-by-shemboid-in-his-own-words-alan-sharples/

Give it a go.  There is some crazy video footage of Vibracathedral Orchestra embedded on the page too.
Thanks to Dan for his interest and giving me the opportunity to write for him.

Some new releases from Shemboid and The Eye Window

I've been really busy lately and now finally have got round to releasing three new albums.
The Eye Window albums are

TIME WALKS TALL
This is an album I recorded a couple of years ago and didn't get to release properly until now.
It is mainly focused on psychotic guitar freakouts, with minimal songs.  The three tracks on it are quite long and the album runs to about 36 minutes.

THE GHOST SHIP
This is a brand new album which I started last year and have now finished.  If you find some of my releases a bit alien, then this might be for you.  It is more of a rock album and has some nice songs, I think, as well as the edginess.  The CD-R version is a limited edition of 50 hand-numbered and signed copies. About 43 minutes.
Check out The Eye Window tab above.

The Shemboid album is called IN THE CLOUDS
Here we are back to talking with aliens and the music is drone-like and guitar and keyboard driven. It was created using a loop station and layered and then worked on computer to create these four compositions.
The four tracks add up to about 36 minutes.
Check out the Shemboid tab above

All of the above albums are in CD-R editions of 50 hand-numbered and signed copies.
Check them out....
I hope you like them
Cheers, Shem

Latest musical activity

THE GHOST SHIP
I've been very busy working on new music.  The latest Eye Window album is finished.....well the music and mix etc anyway - I just have to do the artwork and sleeve now.  It is called "The Ghost Ship".  I think it's better than the last one (FS) - well, I'm pleased with it so far - although I do like the last one too!  Hopefully it will be ready for your listening pleasure soon.

TIME WALKS TALL
I've also had a look/ listen to the one before, which never really saw a run of more than about 6 or so.
It is called "Time Walks Tall".  I've had a think and decided to remove one of the tracks (Come And Gone), which always seemed to niggle me with doubts about it, so I'll re-work that one for a later album.
The remaining tracks seem to work better together without it.  I'm going to do a different cover for it too.  I'll post that up as soon as I get them printed and artwork done.

NEW SHEMBOID ALBUM
Another Shemboid album is on the way.  It is the one I talked about right at the bottom of the page at the start of the year.... yes, it was ages ago now!  Again it is the sleeve now that is delaying release but will be ready fairly soon.  It is a noise-related album and still sounds good to my ears, so I'm going ahead with it.
I'll let you know the title one day soon......

Ok that's all for now,
cheers,
Shem x
